Building ExcellenceLeaders do not command excellence, they build excellence. Excellence is "being all you can be" within the bounds of doing what is right for your organization. To reach excellence you must first be a leader of good character. You must do everything you are supposed to do. Organizations will not achieve excellence by figuring out where it wants to go, then having leaders do whatever they have to in order to get the job done, and then hope their leaders acted with good character. This type of thinking is backwards. Pursuing excellence should not be confused with accomplishing a job or task. When you do planning, you do it by backwards planning. But you do not achieve excellence by backwards planning. Excellence starts with leaders of good and strong character who engage in the entire process of leadership. And the first process is being a person of honorable character.
Waste no more time arguing what a good man should be. Be one. - Marcus AureliusCharacter develops over time. Many think that much of a person's character is formed early in life. However, we do not know exactly how much or how early character develops. But, it is safe to claim that character does not change quickly. A person's observable behavior is an indication of her character. This behavior can be strong or weak, good or bad. A person with strong character shows drive, energy, determination, self-discipline, willpower, and nerve. She sees what she wants and goes after it. She attracts followers. On the other hand, a person with weak character shows none of these traits. She does not know what she wants. Her traits are disorganized, she vacillates and is inconsistent. She will attract no followers.
A strong person can be good or bad. A gang leader is an example of a strong person with a bad character, while an outstanding community leader is one with both strong and good characteristics. An organization needs leaders with both strong and good characteristics, people who will guide them to the future and show that they can be trusted.
Courage - not complacency - is our need today. Leadership not salesmanship. - John F. KennedyTo be an effective leader, your followers must have trust in you and they need to be sold on your vision. Korn-Ferry International, an executive search company, performed a survey on what organizations want from their leaders. The respondents said they wanted people who were both ethical and who convey a strong vision of the future. In any organization, a leader's actions set the pace. This behavior wins trust, loyalty, and ensures the organization's continued vitality. One of the ways to build trust is to display a good sense of character composed of beliefs, values, skills, and traits:
Beliefs are what we hold dear to us and are rooted deeply within us. They could be assumptions or convictions that you hold true regarding people, concepts, or things. They could be the beliefs about life, death, religion, what is good, what is bad, what is human nature, etc.
Values are attitudes about the worth of people, concepts, or things. For example, you might value a good car, home, friendship, personal comfort, or relatives. Values are important as they influence a person's behavior to weigh the importance of alternatives. For example, you might value friends more than privacy, while others might be the opposite.
Skills are the knowledge and abilities that a person gains throughout life. The ability to learn a new skill varies with each individual. Some skills come almost naturally, while others come only by complete devotion to study and practice.
Traits are distinguishing qualities or characteristics of a person, while character is the sum total of these traits. There are hundreds of personality traits, far too many to be discussed here. Instead, we will focus on a few that are crucial for a leader. The more of these you display as a leader, the more your followers will believe and trust in you.
Traits of a Good LeaderCompiled by the Santa Clara University and the Tom Peters Group:
Honest - Display sincerity, integrity, and candor in all your actions. Deceptive behavior will not inspire trust.
Competent - Base your actions on reason and moral principles. Do not make decisions based on childlike emotional desires or feelings.
Forward-looking - Set goals and have a vision of the future. The vision must be owned throughout the organization. Effective leaders envision what they want and how to get it. They habitually pick priorities stemming from their basic values.
Inspiring - Display confidence in all that you do. By showing endurance in mental, physical, and spiritual stamina, you will inspire others to reach for new heights. Take charge when necessary.
Intelligent - Read, study, and seek challenging assignments.
Fair-minded - Show fair treatment to all people. Prejudice is the enemy of justice. Display empathy by being sensitive to the feelings, values, interests, and well-being of others.
Broad-minded - Seek out diversity.
Courageous - Have the perseverance to accomplish a goal, regardless of the seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Display a confident calmness when under stress.
Straightforward - Use sound judgment to make a good decisions at the right time.
Imaginative - Make timely and appropriate changes in your thinking, plans, and methods. Show creativity by thinking of new and better goals, ideas, and solutions to problems. Be innovative!

DEVELOPING LEADERSHIP
Often I have heard that leaders are born, not made. Do you think this is true? How many times did you read a biography of a great leader, and discovered that as a child, he has been quiet, reserved and rather shy? Are those natural qualities of a leader? Of course not! These people have developed their leadership qualities later in life.
Would you like your child to be a leader? What are the qualities of a leader? Here are some of the qualities required to be a leader, and how you can encourage the development of these qualities in your child...
Integrity - remember to be a good example, a role model for your child. Parents teach by example, and integrity is a quality kids learn from their parents. Talk with your child about integrity. One tool that is very helpful is story telling. Look for books that tell about the value of integrity. I found an e-book that has several stories that promote values in kids. You can find it at Inspirational Kids Stories. You can also make up your own stories, that tell about the value of integrity.
Courage - always praise courage. When your child shows courage, notice it and praise it. Praise courage wherever you see an expression of it. Story telling is also very effective in this case.
Creative, independent thinking. In order to develop this quality, it is very helpful to ask questions. When you talk with your child about any subject at all, always ask open questions, that encourage creative thinking. Use the "One Step Farther" principle. After you have gotten all the obvious answers, ask one more question, to come up with a deeper, more creative idea. Questions like "Why", "What would happen if...", "How do you think did it feel...", encourage your child to think creatively. Talk to your child, encourage independent thinking.
Confidence - this is one of the most important qualities required for success in general. To develop confidence in your child, avoid criticizing your child, praise your child sincerely and often, develop a habit to talk about your child's strengths and achievements with him every day. Remember to make it a point to bring up at least one good quality of your child every day. If you adopt it as a routine, over time it will do wonders for your child. It takes only a few minutes to mention an achievement or a strength (a good quality). Encourage your child, repeat the phrase "you can do it" often.
A leader takes responsibility. When something goes wrong, sometimes it makes us feel better if we can blame something else or someone else. A leader takes responsibility. Make sure your child knows that he is the "boss" in his life. His success is his responsibility. We are not victims of our environment, we have control over our life. Teach your child to "come from a place of power". When your child blames someone else or something else for a mishap, or comes up with excuses, you have an opportunity to encourage your child to assume responsibility. Make sure that your child knows that it is Ok to make mistakes. Mistakes are an opportunity to learn. You can help your child draw conclusions, without 'making him wrong,' by asking: "What did you learn from this?", "What do you think went wrong?", "Why do you think this happened?", "How could you avoid this?" and again, "What do you think would happen if...?" Your child should understand that he has no control over other people, and is not expected to have control over other people's actions, but he has full control over his own reaction. This will give your child the feeling of power, as opposed to 'being a victim.'
The conversations that you hold with your child have a profound effect on your child's future. Make sure you take the time to talk with your child every day, to be involved with what is happening in your child's life. To support, encourage and inspire. By doing that, you are being a leader, and you are developing your child's leadership skills. Esther Andrews has grown 2 highly gifted children, and managed the 'School of Gifted Education' for many years. In her newsletter, 'Develop Your Child's Genius' she shares her experiences and provides information about fun and easy activities you can do with your children, to develop their intelligence in a few minutes a day.

AN INTERNALIZED DISCOVERY OF SELF
INTRODUCTION
Trapped within every follower is a hidden leader. The most important quality of true leadership is the spirit of leadership. All humans possess the leadership spirit; buy only those who capture the spirit of leadership ever become truly effective leaders. Simply put, I discovered that the thinking of a leader is what separates him or her from the followers. I found that true leaders are distinguished by a unique mental attitude that emanates from an internalized discovery of self, which creates a strong, positive and confident self – concept and self – worth. I call this unique mental attitude the spirit of leadership. It’s an attitude that affects the entire life of the leader and controls his or her response to life, danger, crises, disappointments, failures, challenges and stress. This attitude gives the leader a sense of confidence, faith and belief in possibilities. It inspires others to have hope in the face of great odds and causes the leader to cultivate a spirit of purpose, daring, passion and conviction.

This spirit of leadership is birthed in the womb of a personal revelation within the leader and manifests itself in specific and characteristic qualities. In this lecture, we will look at how a person can experience his or her personal revelation of leadership, and we will identify the special qualities of this spirit.

Leadership is not an Exclusive Club for the Elite
Together, we will discover that leadership is not the result of study or ordination, position or power. Man (humanity) is essentially a spirit being, and the nature of a person’s spirit dictates the nature that he or she manifests. Until a person’s spirit is changed, the person is unchanged. Leadership, therefore, begins in the spirit of a person. When the spirit of leadership comes alive, it produces an attitude that separates the leader from the follower.

It is important to understand that leadership is not an exclusive club for the elite few who were ‘‘born with it.’’ every human has the instinct and capacity for leadership, but most do not have the courage or will to cultivate it. The spirit called ‘’ man’’ was created to lead, but man lost the spirit of leaderships. All human posses the potential to lead, but most have lost the passion of leadership. The goal of this lecture is to help you to rediscover and recover that leadership spirit.

There are many who confuse the position of leadership with the disposition of true leadership. No matter what position one may be given, status in an organization does not automatically create leadership. Genuine leadership is one’s internal disposition, which relates to a sense of purpose, self – worth and self- concept.

Others have confused leadership with the ability to control others through manipulating their emotions and playing on their fears and needs. But true leadership is a product of inspiration, not manipulation. Then there are those who believe that the tithe makes the leader. However, we all seen many people who have been placed in prominent positions with impressive titles yet have failed miserably because they haven’t understood that real leadership is manifested in performance and results and not just in labels.

True leadership goes far beyond the mechanics of most of the approaches that pervade our leadership programs today. It has more to do with discovering a sense of meaning and significance in life. This distinction separates the leadership quality of passion from the hunger or lust for power. True leaders do not seek power but are driven by a passion to achieve a noble cause.

I am convinced that you were created to be a leading success. Every human being was created to lead in an area of gifting. You were never created to be oppressed, subjugated, subordinated or depressed. The creator designed each human being to fulfill a specific purpose and assignment in life. Your assignment determines your area of leadership. Deep inside each of us is a spirit with a big dream struggling to free itself from the limitations of our past experiences, present circumstances and self – imposed doubts.

We are all victims of unfulfilled passion. I believe that man’s greatest ignorance is of himself. What you believe about yourself creates your world. No human can live beyond the limits of his or her beliefs. In essence, you are what you believe: your beliefs are a product of your thoughts, your thoughts create your beliefs, your beliefs create your convictions, your convictions create your attitude, your attitude controls your perception, and your perception dictates your behaviour.

The result is that your life is what you think it should be. When you think according to the spirit of leadership, you begin the process of becoming a leader. This is the heart of true leadership: your attitudes, your mind – set, your ‘‘spirit of the mind’’

Some of the unique attitudes or qualities of leaders include passion, initiative, teamwork, innovation, persistence, discipline, focus, time management, confidence, positive disposition, patience, peace and compassion. We will explore many of these leadership attitudes so that you can discover how to cultivate them in your life. This lecture is dedicated to helping you recapture the essence of your true leadership potential and the accompanying mental attitude that will manifest the true spirit of leadership.

There is nothing as exclusive as leadership. All the money in the world can make you rich and all the power in the world can make you strong, but these things can never make you a leader. You can inherit a fortune but never leadership. Yet there is no greater need in our twenty – first century world than effective, competent leadership. Our greatest challenge is that of a leadership vacuum. The number one need all over the globe today is not money, social programs, or even new governments. It is quality, moral, disciplined, principle – centered leadership.

We need true leadership in our governments, businesses, schools, civic institutions, youth communities, religious organizations, homes, an din every arena of life – including the disciplines of law, medicine, science, sports, and the media. Yet the search for genuine leadership is becoming more difficult.

Where are the true leaders?
The complex, uncertain, uncharted waters of the twenty – first century have plunged us in to a world of globalization, terrorism, economic uncertainity, famines, health epidemics, social transformation, corporate compromises, moral; and ethical experimentation, religious conflicts, and cultural clashes. These conditions demand the highest quality of leadership that our generation can produce. Yet I have sat in the halls of governments and observed the struggles of today’s leaders.

There is nothing as exclusive as leadership
This crisis in leadership is on many people’s mind today. Questions of moral integrity honor, values, role models, and respectable standard are topics of discussion on many news programs, and they are also in the thoughts of the man on the street. We hear of leaders having sexual escapades. We hear of business magnates falling by the dozens to corruption. We see national leaders and their cabinet members being tried by their own governments for stealing and other financial misconduct. We learn of priests abusing and misusing their authority and positions in order to take advantage of those whom they were entrusted to care for. Where are the true leaders today? I believe the problem is that leadership has become a role one plays rather than a life one leads. Contemporary leaders are attempting to divorce their personal lives from their public responsibilities and their personal standards from their public lives. To many, leadership is an act, not a calling. Therefore, when they are in their offices, they act a certain way, but they leave, they lead double lives. This is a contradiction of true leadership. Leadership is not a technique, a style, or the acquisition of skills, but a manifestation of a spirit.

Many institutions, fortune 500 companies, government agencies, civic organizations and non profit entities spend billions of dollars every year training thousands of would – be leaders in management techniques, human manipulation skills, organizational stems, methods of control and persuasion, and much more in the hopes of producing potential or better leaders. Yet such seminars cannot produce true leaders. Furthermore, the quality1 and standard of leaders are not increasing, but decreasing.

Leadership has become a role one plays rather than a life one leads
The shelves of every bookstore are stacked with books on the subject of leadership. Some promise instant transformation from follower to leader, while others sell cheap ideas that purport to create leaders by the application of shallow psychology and worn – out principles that frustrate those who invest in them. Research on how to be a leader continues by the leadership gurus, as colleges and universities add special courses designed to produce or improve the cadre of leaders. Yet I believe that all the college courses in leadership can never make a leader.

Many of those whom we idolized as leaders in our modern societies have disappointed us as their fragile; formerly hidden inconsistencies have been exposed. Just the mention of Enron, WorldCom, Tyco, Martha Stewart, Richard Nixon, Bill Clinton and Catholic priests tells the story of our culture of defective leadership. Moral defects; abuses of power, privilege and trust; misuses of resources; corruption; and hypocrisy have become associated with leadership today perhaps more than at any other time in history.

Morality, ethics, principles, convictions, standards, faithfulness, transparency, trustworthiness, and honesty are rare commodities in the field of contemporary leadership. Why is true leadership so difficult to find?

What makes a true leader?
What makes a leader? How are genuine leaders produced? When does one truly become a leader? Is there a predictor of leadership? What are the qualities that distinguish leaders from followers? This lecture is about the missing ingredient in leadership development. It’s about the elusive link between talent, titles and leadership. Genuine leadership is not a result of memorizing formulas, learning skills, imitating methods, or training in techniques. It is an attitude of the heart.

nature of man

NATURE OF MAN
INTRODUCTION
Although man is not a machine, a leader who hopes to be effective in getting work done through people must understand something about the nature of man. Humans are much more difficult to understand than machines because the different components of the body are drastically affected in so many ways both by the environment and by the body’s own chemicsl composition. Human emotions add to the complicated basic human nature as they affect leadership.
Psalm 8:4 asks, ‘‘what is man?’’ it then proceeds to answer the question by affirming that man is a special creation of God, created as man from the begining. At no stage in his history has Gos considered him to be an animal. Man was always man.
What is important for a christian leader is to look at man through God’s eyes. The bible says that God created man for His own pleasure; that in His sight man is only a little lower than the angels (Psalm8:5). Leadership then, needs to understand and be aware of the marvelous creation it is working with.
WHAT IS MAN
(A) Man is a special creation of God with a definite purpose – man was created by God as a special being. He is completely different from animals which inhabit the earth and from angels that inhabit the heavens as he consists of body, soul and spirit (Genesis 1:26-27)
(B) Man was created to have dominion over God’s creation upon the earth – (Genesis 1:26-27, hebrews 2:6-8). God purposed that he should have dominion over the rest of His creation on this earth. God implanted in him a need and desire to dominate the creation around him – animals, his envirnment, nature, e.t.c. it is also important to recognise that this nature is a source of many leadership and group problems. Most conflicts, in reality are leadership conflicts. They exist on national, regional, local, church and personal level.
Although it is natural for man to desire leadership, he is not born with its know – how and skills. He needs to learn the necessary art and skills even as he has to learn how to fulfil other natural needs such as walking, talkiing and eating. Often Christians who are not aware of this God – implanted nature in man accuse their fellow – men and brethren of carnality when they show a desire for certain positions within the church or other cghristian organisations.(1 Timothy 3:1)
(C) Man was created to be a ‘‘Doer’’ – man was created in the image of God (Genesis1:26-27) God is the Master Creator and man, made in His image, also has the need, the ability, the authority and the responsibility to recreate what God created originally in the form of raw materials. This need and skill distinguishes man from all other creatures (Genesis 1:28) states man is to ‘‘replenish the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish’’ it is the duty and responsibility of Christian leadership to live, communicate in such a manner that people will develop trust and belief in their standards and values.
A good leader must examine himself frequently to see which components of his nature are shaping his attitudes and skills and consider the results and consequences of his leadership. A good leader must recognise all the facets of human nature and have the necessary knowlege and skill under God to harmonise these complex and conflicting attributes of man into one balanced and useful personality that can make a positive contribution to his society and bring glory to God.

leadership call

A CALL TO LEADERSHIP
God calls some of His people to be leaders. Once a Christian has received a call from God to leadership (or to full – time Christian work), it is not something to be taken lightly. In fact, such a call is a tremendous privilege and responsibility. Any person called by God to some leadership capacity or full – time Christian work should have a special inward witness to this from the Holy Spirit. No other person can invent a true call from God. It is foundational to the person’s life from then on.
To be an effcective leader in God’s church, you must be called by God to the task. In fact, all God’s leaders must bear a ‘word’ from the Lord in their heart which affirms God’s call. They need a word of assurance of who God is; they need to know what he can do and they need to know that He has called them into the work they are doing.
There is also no escape clause due to youthfulness, when it comes to a call from God to leadership (Jeremiah 1:6-10). Young people must not fear those who are older, more experienced and better educated. These factors are not to be despised, but they are not the most important consideration.
DISCERNMENT OF CALL
The call of God on a person’s life may change with time. How then does a Christian discern whether God has callled them to be a leader in His church? A major weakness in current trends in discernment of spiritual giftings and callings is the amount of responsibility which is laid at the door of the person concerned. God does not always call the most likely or even the most humanly gifted people. There is a mystery about God’s call that can only be answered in the heart of God. In fact, God often calls the unlikely into positions of authority (1 Corinthians 1:26-27)
FOUR MAJOR FACTORS TO BE CONSIDERED AS FAR AS GOD GIVEN CALL TO MINISTRY OF LEADERSHIP IS CONCERNED
1. A sense of call – many people in church today mix up the wish to be a leader, with God’s call to be one. Some Christians even to try to force the issue by going to Bible college or pushing themselves into church leadership. This is never any substitute for God’s call. Of course, the scriptures tell us to desire the best gifts, but that desire should never override the reality of the call of God to a specific and unique ministry. A real call of God is like a seed planted in a field- it does not die but grows, if given half a chance.
2. A heart for the work – God usually gives us a desire for the work after He called us to do it. This may not be evident at first, but as we move into our call in God, there will be nowhere else we would want to go and nothing else we would rather do – it will be burning in our bones (Jeremaih 20:9). Even in the most traumatic situations, we will desire to serve the Lord. We must remember though that there is a distinction between desiring and lliking or enjoying. A heart for the work does not mean that we will enjoy every experience we will have in our ministry for God. Often the burden for the work will lie so heavily upon us that it will seem as though it will break us.
3. Exercise of gift - a man’s ministry makes room for itself. A real call of God will manifest itself in exercise. God does not appoint and annoint into inertia. There is an in built dynamic in the call of God through which it will continually find expression in practice. A call from God operates a sort of spiritual ambition within the heart: not an ambition of the flesh or self – interest, but a desire that comes from God to be going on in the work and to find the means and outlets for what is inside us to be fulfilled in practice.
4. Fruitfulness – so many people lay claim to ministry in advance of fruitfulness, when, in fact, fruitfulness is the real sign of ministry. ‘‘do not neglect your gift, which was given you through a prophetic message when the body of elders laid their hands on you.’’
FULL- TIME OR NOT
There are certain callings to leadership in God’s church that require full- time attention. Others, however, are ’10 hours’ callings, e.g. worship leading or Sunday school teaching. We need to decide whether or not the calling we have can be carried on in a full –time capacity. Can our calling fill in sufficient hours of the week and can it support our needs? God chooses the people He will call into leadership and He chooses the way in which they will be called. Every Christian leader wii receive their call from God in a different way, God is a God of huge variety and creativity.God’s people do not need any other type of call than the one they received from Him. We should never be jealous of another person’s call or the way they received it; and we certainily should not feel condemned because our call was not as spectacular as someone’s else’s.
GOD’S TIMING
Many Christians run ahead of God and step out into their call before it is His time to do so. We need to wait on the Lord and move into our calling only when the Lord so directs. The anointing from God we will need to fulfil our call will then be evident. Trying to step into a call outside of God’s timing necessitates striving, because we will have to work at a job in our own strenght. Some people may try and push you forward before your time. Do not yield to this! It is important to follow God’s leading alone, because very often His timing is contrary to man’s wisdom. As we progress in our Christian walk, one lesson we should learn quickly is that God’s timing is perfect. Take care never to rush ahead of God (Psalm 37:23-24, Proverbs 3:5-6).
The Bible abounds with people who were called by God, but who underwent a period of preparation and waiting before God brought them into their place of call, e.g. Jesus was 30 before He entered His ministry, David was a shepherd and then a leader in exile before ascending to the throne of israel. We need to learn to wait on God (Psalm 27:14).
Nobody can make up a call from God. A call to ministry is like a seed: it has the shape, essence and colour of the ministry within it. When we are called by God to a ministry, He places within us all we need to operate fruitfully and successfully within that call.
Many leaders fail because they attempt to enter into leadership without a divine call from God. If God does not back up our claim to a call, we are doomed from the start, no matter how noble our reasons for entering leadership. Without God, we will never be sufficiently equipped to fulfil any task in His kingdom and therefore, if we attempt a task without a God – given call to work, we will have to operate and function in our own strenght. This is one of the resons that church leadership todayis no ineffective.
A person in a position of leadership needs the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the anointing of God in order to fulfil their role. If they do not have these things, they are in grave danger of falling flat on their faces.never be tempted to invent a word from the Lord to back up a desire to o something for God.
God will not let His name be ridiculed and He will not let His word fail to accomplish that for which it was sent (Isaiah 55:11). God will back up His name and honour His word with whatever power is necessary and that means that nothing can stop it from coming to pass (Titus 1:2).the fact of being divinely commissioned makes the difference in the spiritual productivity of a ministry, self – sent, self – made or self – empowered ministries, who are commissioned by the Lord, are sure to fail.

Effective leadership

HEARING GOD’S VOICE; key to effective spiritual leadership

Is hearing God’s voice normal Christianity?
Are God’s thoughts attainable?
What is a witness of the spirit?
Is there creative power in the proceeding word of God?

Hearing the Holy Spirit is the greatest adventure known the man. Yet many Christians live obvious to the awesome that they can live in live in an active engagement of conversation and communication with Him. Hearing from God is not an option, nor is it a phenomenon, reserved for a special few. Knowing the voice of the spirit is a necessity, more in this day than in any other day.
OBJECTIVE OF THIS DAY LECTURE
Hearing the voice of God should be the most basic foundational thing we learn in our walk with Christ as Christians. (John 6:63):-
· Practical instruction on how to stir up the Holy Spirit and begin to hear His voice daily.
· To feed and equip you for the service of the master
· And the desire to hear the master’s voice and do His will.

There is a divine desire kindled a fresh in the hearts of many believers everywhere to know the mind of the spirit, and to expand energy only on that to which He has called them. Hearing God is encountering life. Yes’ it is possible to hear God and that daily. Hearing from the throne is normal Christianity.

Heb 1:1,2 compares it with John 10:16; 18:38. Jesus here didn’t say that His sheep listen or read books in matters of hearing His voice (though these are good in our Christian growth) but they hear and know His voice and follow Him. Sincerely, all Christians do hear God, b4t 0any d6n’t even 2n6w 5t, 6r d6n’t cred5t H50 when He 5s s-ea25ng. 64r eyes are clogged by many things. Those who hear God are capable of knowing the mind of the spirit and receiving strategies in prayer. Which will expose the enemies’ tactics (2 Kings 6:8-23)? Yet we can’t solely blame the devil, for it is really lack of proper direction that has robbed us. Hearing from God is not a spiritual gift – all of us (believers in Christ) should and do hear from God, every child of God is a candidate for the gift of the Spirit. To function effectively in our areas of calling.

THE WRITTEN WORD AND THE PROCEEDING WORD
We don’t grow in God until we begin to hear (Deut8:3; John16:12,3).
There is no question that God speaks to us through His written word (the logos) which is the mind of God and the will of God. The scriptures are gold mines of treasures that cover every aspect of life. But it is one thin g ton read a book, and quite another thing to know the author. Until the author, the Holy Spirit makes the word come alive; it is only ink on paper. Without the help of the Holy Spirit will not experience the flow of Life that comes through the written word.

You can separate the voice, revelation and the dreams God gives or speaks from His written word. The rhema must confirm with the logos (Isaiah8:20)

EXAMPLES FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT EVENTS
1. SAMUEL – an audible voice (Samuel 3:1 - 21). The account of Samuel quick response to what he thought to be the voice of Eli, and Eli’s recognition that God was speaking to Samuel (a young Christian worker), “And Samuel did not yet know the Lord”
To know means more than intellectual knowledge. It implies personal acquaintance.

It was at the; lord’s fourth call, that he responded. At this point we see human readiness to hear as a condition to further word from God. (Acts 26:14 - 18)
Hearing the call of God- the major truths are:-
· God is silent when His word is not know
· God’s call may be mistaken as in the case of Samuel
· God’s word comes through when His servants listen.

2. ELIJAH – A still small voice (1 Kings 19:8 - 18)
In this instance the usual means which God had previously used to reveal Himself were rejected. On this occasion there was only a still small voice. Speaking to Elijah through the still small voice was God’ way of showing him that His designs are promoted also by patience and long-suffering.

Over zealousness was the problem of the prophet. Fine he had passion for God. A man like every one else –he (James5:17) withdraw to be alone in order to hear from God. In times like this, God understands better than the servant Himself what is needed, (Psalm 46:10). This is often a difficult lesson for man (servants) of God to learn (Isaiah 30:15; 32:17).
For this common human experience, God had a threefold remedy:-
· Proper care for the physical body.
· A fresh revelation from God, hearing from heaven a still small voice.
· A renewed mission.

DESIRE TO HEAR GOD’ VOICE.
IS God still speaking today? Is it possible to hear the voice of God? Many believers in Christ are confused about this issue. Sincerely speaking, few individuals Christians really know and discern the voice of the Holy Spirit. God is always willing to speak to His people, but His voice is always undiscerned and unrecognized, but we fail to understand the way of the Spirit.
To learn to hear from God is the greatest ability any Christian can posses. Well-intentioned Christians make kingdom decisions which are derived from man’s perspective and not God’s. These decisions are frequently made from information and logic and not based on the knowledge given by the Holy Spirit to believers. Certainly many of us have been misuse and abuse but those who claim to have heard God. In many assemblies, what is common today is “the lord spoke to me”- this is an abuse when in reality God had not spoken. We should be careful to differentiate and filter the many voices (human Satan’s voice, demon’s voice) from God’s voice. (Jere 5:30, 31).

I believe that God still speaks to us today by His Holy Spirit just as he did in the bible day’s we need to hear the voice of God. We can only live (have the life and blessing of the Lord in our churches today) by hearing word that continues to proceed from God’s mouth tom our hearts, (Matt 4:4). The word “proceeded” speaks of a present- continuing function. That means something that happened in the past, is happening in the present, will happen in the future.

ASPECTS FOR WHICH A LEADER MUST PREPARE IN
ADVANCE.
There include the establishment of a system for evaluating personnel, a system of check and control and methods of motivation, discipline and sanction.
A) Establishing a system for evaluating personnel.
An important fact a leader with who deals directly with people is that these find satisfaction in knowing that their interest are not completely overshadowed by the need to get the objectives fulfilled. One concern of concern of workers is their promotion and their forms of advancement on the basis of personal evaluation. personal evaluation is generally done on a periodic basis or when one is moved from one duty to another. If there exist any doubt about honesty of evaluations of the effectiveness of the method used, much harm and dissatisfaction can be generated during the period of evaluation. In most Christian organization, we avoid personnel evaluation because of the question “who are you to judge other?”
Such question is indeed ludicrous. Of cause we can evaluate one another, and indeed we need to. Those who practice higher standard in their lives and works are worthy of greater compensation and trust. Those who are negligent and careless cannot be entrusted with the same responsibility and should be rated lower.

There are basically three areas in regards to personnel evaluation. These are performance, character and potential for the development to higher responsibility.
1) Performance is the easiest to evaluate because it is directly measurable. In performance, we look for two things- quality and quantity. Quality tells us how well the work has been done. Quantity tells us how much work has been done.
To accurately evaluate performance it is necessary to have fixed standard against which to measure. It may be in form of written specification and quotas, or in form of actual products made to acceptable standard For example, if we were in the book printing business we could evaluate our product against other book or against written specifications.

2) Character evaluation is much more difficult. The real difficult here is that each evaluator have different standard by which me measures others. Often we set character standard for others which we our selves do not meet. Character evaluation depends more on the evaluator than it does on the one being evaluated. These area needs to be handled carefully or serious problem can be created. In Christian work character in an important factor and Gods word is fundamental in its evaluation.

3) Many people have the potential to do more than they are normally required to do. It important to recognize the potential people have for further development. This may save the organization money and time in acquiring people for higher positions. When performance and character indicate lack of required standard or skills, leadership should be consider some form of training or development program to improve them. This may take place either within the organization, or outside in a specialized area.
One tragic fact is that must Christian will attend night classes to study craft and skills, but will scarcely attend those specifically designed to improve their performance in their work in the church. For example, few Sunday school training programs are ever successful because attendance is low. Leadership must find better ways of training to help those who attend and to motivate other.
B) Establishing a system of check and controls
We have considered this under “delegation “but it needs to emphasized. In leading and directing people one need a system which will keep him informed of the progress different individuals or departments are making. If one is working to a programmed scheduled this is very important, especially if one department is dependant on another for collective progression of work.
C) Establishing methods of motivation.
We are dealing with human beings. There is that a man who responds to motivation of reward and competition. One form of motivation may work effectively in one area or culture but fail miserable in another. In Christian work some look at reward as being carnal and inappropriate. There is a danger of working for rewards only, which would be inappropriate , but reward for work well done is also Gods way of compensating for effort and sacrifice “beyond the call of duty.” In our lesson on motivation, we will deal with this matter in greater detail.
D) Establishing a system of discipline and punishment.
Is it a need, or appropriate, that a Christian organization or church should exercise discipline and even some form of punishment? Of course it is. When dealing with people there is always a need for discipline. We started under “ authority ‘’ that it includes an element we called the ‘’or –else-factor ‘’ When authority is disregarded there may with man. we need to do so also.;

V) THERE ARE TWO WAYS OF REACHING AN OBJECTIVE .
There is only one way to become a leader and that is to’’ be one’’ There are two ways of lifting a target –or reaching an objective these are by using the ‘’big gun’ or the guided missile’’

A. There is a leader who can be compared to a big artillery gun.
His method of operating is ‘’load aim fire ‘’if he misses the procedure is repeated over and over until the target is hit .Anyone who has any experience with big gun ‘’ will understand that much have in general created before the target is it. So it is with this leader. He shoots off ‘’frequently, but only occasionally scores a point. The main problem with the big gun is that once fired there is no control over its missile. It does not known his target ,it can only go the direction it was pointed .Many leaders do not have the capability of making adjustments in their trajectory when the target moves or if the initial aim was not exactly right. This is why there are so many misses and near misses in human undertaking.
B. Another type of leader can be compared to a guided missile. Guided missile seldom misses their target. There may be time when one needs to use ‘’big gun’’ tactics in leadership, the target may be unclear and explanatory shots may be require. However, there is considerable wastage in this method, and usually uninvolved people get hunt. Guided missile are relevant to good leadership and when properly applied, help on to ‘’zero in’’ on a target with efficiency and effectiveness. Here are some characteristics of a guided missile and good leadership.
1. The guided missiles pick up his target before it is launched or released. A good leader knows where he is going before he starts out.

2. The guided missiles depends on ‘’feedback’’ from the target for its guidance information. Some missiles are astro-guided, which means they rely on information from the heaven, or stars to know their position relative to their objectives. Then there the ‘’heart –seeking’’ missiles which home it on a heat source. The sidewinder missiles, developed by the united Sate are a heat – seeking weapon. This is why it is so effective against aircraft which produce tremendous quantities of heat The permittivity of its guidance system was so great that it would ‘’home in’’ on in ordinary flashlight five feet away. Other missiles are radar guided. A good leader starts out with certain information regarding his target before he is launched ‘’ and once he is on the move he relies heavily on feedback information which comes from objective. He is objective –oriented and not pen-oriented .

3.The guided missile has the capability of making directional changes while in flight to adjust to atmospheric condition and target changes .A good leader has the capacity to make necessary changes in his approach ,should there be unexpected ‘’confrontation ‘’not programmed into the objective formulas or if his objective has altered in any way .

4. The guided missiles is sensitive to, and feeds on, its errors.
What this means that a missile has the capacity to recognize when it is wrong or off target. It is only when it comes that it is wrong that makes correction and put itself right. its knowledge of its error is its secret of sasses. A good leader is one who tries to avoid foolish and unnecessary errors, but he is able and ready to use information gained from his errors . An ignored error leads to further error and eventually to failure to accomplish what one sets out to do. It is an intrigued fact that summative to our faults and errors can provide with positive guidance in leadership and personal life. Many leaders fail in their rude because their judgment of others and their decision are base on a negative attitude towards errors and mistakes make by themselves. A true Christian ought to be a guided missile,

ABOUT US

THE WEST AFRICAN YOUTH LEADERSHIP ASSOCIATION (WAYLA) is a dynamic, resourceful, non-governmental organization whose major aim is to build the leadership potentials in the youth of the West African sub-region. The fundamental challenges faced by youths are that of Empowerment, Capacity Building and Socio Economic Development. These challenges have received scant attention on many fronts, including the West African Sub-Regional Bodies. Unlike Health and Gender issues which are receiving increasing attention, the issues of Empowerment, Capacity Building and Citizenship Education for Young people appear to be permanently on the backburner, hence WAYLA is earmarked to handles those challenges in the West African sub-Region.

We believe that the youth are leaders in making, and if their energies are channeled in the right direction, they can change the fortune of the sub-region.
